Steph Nickel’s shares her favourite podcasts which are full of variety, and interesting topics. She recommends a half dozen podcasts she will listen to this year.

Half a Dozen Podcasts

I’ve already been reading both fiction and nonfiction this year, but today, I’d like to mention half a dozen podcasts I intend to continue listening to throughout the year ahead.

You’ve heard me mention both Clutter Free Academy and Communicator Academy before, but they’re both worth referring to again.

Clutter Free Academy

Clutter Free Academy features author and speaker Kathi Lipp and her guests. Research says 67 percent of Americans battle with clutter. (I’m sure the statistics are the similar here in Canada.) While there are many approaches to decluttering and organizing our home, Kathi’s system is sustainable and addresses not only the clutter in our home but also in our heart and head as well.

The Clutter Free Academy Facebook group is known as “the kindest corner of the internet.” It is a safe place to be open and honest about our struggles and absolutely no shaming is tolerated.

Among her many books, Kathi has written the Clutter Free Bible Study. Our clutter has far more spiritual implications than you may think.

Communicator Academy

The second podcast I intend to continue listening to regularly is Communicator Academy with cohosts Kathi Lipp and author Michelle Cushatt. (Michelle’s newest book, Relentless, is on my 2020 To Be Read list.)

Communicator Academy addresses issues for all Christian communicators, including those who would like to share the message God has placed on their heart but haven’t started doing so publicly yet. The podcast is encouraging and practical! If you are interested in speaking, in person or online, I recommend you check out Communicator Academy.

Pray Every Day

I begin many days by listening to Mary DeMuth’s Pray Every Day. Mary, a prolific author, reads a brief passage of Scripture and then prays for her listeners. Mary’s authenticity keeps me coming back. Plus, my hubby and I are using her book Outrageous Grace Every Day as our daily devotional. The book is a study in the book of Romans.

There has been so much talk these days about the discoveries in neuroscience, including talk among the some of the Christian podcasters I listen to. So, I decided to explore the podcasts that make this topic accessible for us non-sciency types. Enter Brain Science by Ginger Campbell, MD. Ginger makes the subject understandable, and I have already purchased a book he referred to.

I renewed my Audible subscription and downloaded my copy of Better with Age, The Psychology of Successful Aging by Alan D. Castel, PhD. I’ve begun to listen to it and highly recommend it, not only to those in their 50s and 60s and beyond but also to younger people who want to do what they already can to become “better with age.”

The Self Publishing Show

Each week I listen to The Self Publishing Show with Mark Dawson and James Blatch. One of my goals for 2020 is to indie publish at least one or two books. I listen to several podcasts that help me keep up with the industry, The Self Publishing Show among them. Although the show is not presented from a Christian worldview, it includes a wealth of information of interest to authors and anyone curious about what it takes to become a successful indie author.

Writing Tip of the Day

For #6, I’m going to cheat … a little. I want to mention two podcasts by author Michael La Ronn. First, the very brief Writing Tip of the Day. As you can tell from the title, Michael shares a tip for authors of pretty much every skill level. They are current, relevant, and, in most cases, less than five minutes.

The Writer’s Journey

The second podcast created by Michael La Ronn that I want to mention is The Writer’s Journey, in which Michael takes us with him on his journey from “nobody to bestselling author.” Listeners journey with Michael in real time and get a sense of the commitment it takes to become a bestselling author. While this may not be your goal, if you want to write and want up-to-date information on the industry, you may enjoy The Writer’s Journey.

While not all these podcasters are Christian, we, of course, have much to learn from both fellow believers and others who are experts in their field.

As I was compiling today’s list of podcasts, I realized there are so many more I intend to listen to on a regular basis: The Grit ‘n’ Grace Girls Podcast with Cheri Gregory and Amy Carroll, The Write Now Podcast with Sarah Rhea Werner, and Birth Words with Sara Pixton, to name just three. Perhaps, I will write another post on podcasts later in the year.
