The Last Pronouncement About Jesus, Part 1

You may know about Jesus, but do you know what is the last pronouncement about Jesus in the Bible? Shane explains.

The Last Pronouncement About Jesus

What is the last pronouncement made concerning the Lord Jesus Christ in the gospels?  Do you remember?  I absolutely love it.  I ponder it often and marvel at the colossal claim John makes in order to end his record of the Lord Jesus’ life.  He said,

“there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written” .

John 21:25

Jesus Christ is that big.  Think of it, the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.  How infinite is His person!  How limitless, how inexhaustible, how sublime!

What John is saying is that the record of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ as found in the gospels is just a sampling of His person, just a small taste of what He infinitely is.  If He is to fill our hearts and minds with the wonder of the revelation of His person for all eternity, then it would be a fairly simply accomplished to fill this whole world with the books that could be written of Him.

The Half Has Not Been Told

When it comes to Christ, we must confess, the half has not been told.  Who are we kidding, not even a tenth has been told and even that may be an ambitious number.  Like the mammoth iceberg whose bulk immensity lay submerged beneath the frigid waters, so too, the worth and full disclosure of our Lord Jesus Christ awaits a coming day, that is to say, the Christ who is revealed in the gospels is sufficient for all our needs but it is in no way a complete revelation of Who He is.  He is infinitely more.

Even humanly speaking there is so much more to see.  The depths of the oceans on this earth have not yet been catalogued.  The nature of the planets in our solar system have not yet been discovered.

And the vastness of space has only recently begun to unfold to us the oceans upon oceans of space that surround us in this universe, as telescope after powerful telescope unveils to our eyes the craftsmanship of His fingertips.  So much more vast and beautiful and intricate is the illimitable, unfathomable, immeasurable God, for whom all nature exists just to reflect and declare the attributes of His person.

There Is So Much More To Come About Jesus

We have seen the first act of the play but there is so much more to come.  We can see only the local neighborhood of our galaxy but not without the power of the telescope.  The naked eye is an insufficient tool with which to appreciate the marvels of space.

Likewise, the human heart is an insufficient instrument with which to worship the attributes of an amazing and limitless God.  Without the gospels we would know nothing of the infinite Son, around whom orbits every creature in heaven and earth.  The world could not possibly contain the books that could be written.

We read in Matthew chapter 11 verse 25 that “no one knows the Son except the Father.”  In one sense, we do know the Son.  We know Who He is, we know why He came, we know something of what He is like, etc.  But in another sense, we do not know Him at all – not in His entirety, not in His essence, and not in His greatness, etc.   His greatness is unsearchable we read in Psalm 145:3.  His ways are past finding out, we read in Romans 11:33.  We know Him in a measure, a small measure, and we must not limit His greatness to our small appreciation of Him.
