Vision Boards.

Vision boards are a useful tool in understanding God’s plan for you. Carol explains how she has used a vision board to help her share her gift.

Needs Change

Puzzle pieces in our lives get jumbled around. Sometimes it feels like there must be too many pieces to fit into the picture of our lives.

Sometimes thinking ahead of what I might like to do or where I see my life headed feels overwhelming. I need to help my youngest daughter who lives with us and has some special needs. What she needs help with varies depending on her health and what she is trying to accomplish.

My husband’s health has deteriorated over the last few months and his needs have changed. Therefore our lives and what we plan has changed too and taken a different course than we expected. My puzzle pieces are all mixed up.

Vision Boards and Puzzles

When someone suggested doing a vision board as an exercise, I did not know what to think about the suggestion in this mixed up puzzle I am living. I had never done a vision board, did not know if I even wanted to do one or exactly what it involved.

I checked it out. A vision board is a collage of images and affirmations of one’s dreams and desires, designed to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation. They aren’t magical and I don’t believe they will speak to a universe about our intentions although some might take them that way.

They are a way to put into pictures and words what you are working towards or dreaming about. But even though they can inspire and motivate you still need to put the work into accomplishing anything on them. Working through this process can provide clarity for you.

My Lack of a Vision Board

Despite my lack of a vision board, I do like to surround myself with things and pictures that inspire creativity, offer beauty and encourage me to dream, hope, smile and have faith. I glance up from typing this piece and see the word dream, little rocks with words like hope, believe, smile, wisdom and faith carved into them and photos from our trip, and artwork by people I know.

I finally tried putting pieces together on one board that encapsulated what I believe God has gifted me with and wants me to work on doing as I trust him.

Storytelling and Reminders

Storytelling and reminders that everyone has a story fills some of the space. They are such a key component of what I do and want to do more of. I can help them learn how to preserve the memories and tell the stories well. Listening to their stories will help them have an audience.

The background on the vision board includes music which soothes my soul, uplifts my spirits and simply adds to a creative mood. It gives me a chance to be encouraged as I listen to the words of gospel songs and old hymns.

Laughter and smiles are brought to focus by the vision board. A smile can help encourage anyone and laughter is good medicine. They can brighten our day and we can use them to bring a spot of joy or hope to someone else as well.

Words Are Powerful Pieces

Words are powerful pieces of our everyday lives. They can pull us down or build us up. The words on my vision board are encouraging ones. Words like family, friends and faith hold deep meaning. I know that at times family and even friends can cause hurts and drag us down but I love to preserve the memories and the lessons learned along the journey of good times and bad too. My faith helps me enjoy the good times and overcome the messes, turning them into messages of hope.

When I finished a time of playing with collage, colours and thoughts, I sat the vision board on my desk under the word dream and the Footprints poem to remind me of my faith.

Trust God First

Proverbs 3: 5,6 says

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

When I think of vision boards, I think of this verse for the key to me is to trust God first and then let him direct my paths. A key word for me is faithful. I need to simply be faithful and obedient to walk through whatever doors God opens. Meanwhile the board I made sits propped by my desk to remind me to praise God, to listen to and share stories of what God has and is doing and to take time to be creative.

Psalm 78:2 -4 says,

I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter hidden things, things from of old- what we have heard and known what our fathers have told us; we will not hide them from their children; we will tell
the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power and the wonders he has done.

What pictures, words, verse, thoughts has God given you for your life?  Maybe have some fun and place them on a canvas or a board to remind you of God’s plan for your life as you trust him daily.
