Cake With the President – FBH International

Brad talks about the global gospel and eating cake with the President . No, not that President! The President of FBH Ministries, our own Ron Hughes.

Eating Cake With the President!

I was intending to call this submission a visit with the President, however I was eating a piece of my wife’s delicious carrot cake while working on it, and was reminded of how much the President enjoyed his carrot cake, thus the title… “Cake With The President.” I’m speaking about the President of FBH Ministries Ron Hughes.

My wife Karen and I had the pleasure recently of hosting him for an all too short period of time while he was visiting our area and chapel here in Greenland Nova Scotia, on a campaign through the Maritimes. It’s wonderful how God bonds us together in Christ, with a spirit of fellowship that is warm and easy, and loving, and familial.

Missionaries, Ministries and Maritimes

Ron shared with us stories from he and his wife Debbie’s years spent as missionaries in a different hemisphere, prior to the Lord directing them back to Ontario, where Ron has headed up the work at FBH this past 25 years. His passion for the Lords work is evident, and his engaging and complimentary personality endear him to one’s heart, effectively preparing you for his sharing of the Lords work about FBH Ministries and Hopestream Radio, the wonderful things being carried out around the world.

Ron; we learned as well, loves to eat with passion. Karen made a delicious seafood chowder, and served up a mouthwatering appetizer of pan seared Digby scallops. We are fortunate to have a young scallop fisherman next door, so the bounty and quality of these scallops was first rate…if I do say so myself. After the seafood feast, Karen told Ron to save a little room for desert; her all-time specialty…carrot cake. Ron exclaimed; “you must be kidding…. carrot cake is my all-time favorite desert.” I told him my wife has baked over 300 of these carrot cakes in her lifetime, blessing us with them at Christmas , family birthdays, fundraisers and special occasions; and all delivering the same consistent mouthwatering goodness. It was delightful to see him enjoy her cake so much, and declare he’d be having more for breakfast.

With a busy itinerary planned here for the Maritimes, and an overall busy speaking schedule, I thought it might be nice for our brother to be ministered to for a change. There were gospel meetings being held close-by in an old school building. The nearby Gospel Hall had sponsored a series of messages with a speaker from PEI, an adventurous campaign spread out over fourteen consecutive nights. Karen and I had attended a couple evenings the previous week, and knew our brother Ron would enjoy the fellowship there, and the ability to sit for an hour and hear a wonderful gospel presentation.

Gospel Presentation

Ron truly did enjoy the wonderful words from the pulpit, and of course the time of conversation following. It’s always a special time when we have an opportunity to meet new brothers and sisters in Christ for the first time.

I had previously spoken to one of the elders about how nice it was to see the gospel being presented here in the midst of town, in a building and setting that was accessible and comfortable for any who might want to attend. By comfortable, I mean a setting that is different from a church building, a setting that might not present any intimidation to those who may be interested in hearing the message, but a bit hesitant to walk into the unfamiliar territory that is a church building.

On the evenings we had attended, including the evening with Ron, there were on average 25 – 35 people present. Most were regular attendees from the sponsor church, with only a handful or less of curious new folk. That doesn’t sound too bad for our small area. But in conversation with the elder, he mentioned they had mailed out over 4000 postcards to the surrounding communities. That’s less than 1% of a response. In advertising terms, that’s abysmal. It can be discouraging, and it reminds us how far we’ve come in a general “falling away” from an interest in the most important message of our lives, the gospel message, the good news from the word of God.

Holy Spirit At Work

But we can rest assured that God sees and rewards every effort, and the Holy Spirit is just as much at work today, as it has been for these past 2000 years. Is 59:1 says: “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.”  The bible also reminds us that “the promise is unto you, and to your children and to all that are afar off, even to as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:39

It may be discouraging that there are so few in these last days, who have an interest in hearing, but it is with confidence and the almighty assurance we have from Gods word, that none who are searching will be passed by.

Ron’s Presentation and the Global Gospel

The following evening, brother Ron gave his wonderful presentation at our church. Again, the crowd was not large, between 25 and 30, but it encouraged all to hear of how lives truly are being changed in Russia, Ukraine, the Arab Middle East and throughout the Spanish speaking world through the ministry of FBH and Hopestream Radio. We realized how we were blessed, sitting in our seats in the obscure little community of Greenland, Nova Scotia Canada, to hear heartwarming stories of lives changed forever through the message of the gospel; examples presented of Christ entering the hearts of yearning souls from the far reaches of the earth. We were reminded of the powerful command from Jesus; “go ye into all the world and preach the gospel.”

Praying for the Global Gospel

Truly the message of the good news of Christ is being declared, across the globe, from FBH ministries, and from hundreds and even thousands of other ministries, groups, and organizations that bring the message of the evangel, declaring the life-changing truth of the gospel of Christ Jesus.

Let’s take a moment to consider praying for, and supporting financially and/or in other ways, the outreach of these works who are sounding forth the gospel message that our Lord Jesus himself has commissioned.

We pray as well, a safe return home for our brother Ron, and reiterate the words of Paul the Apostle, that “we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.”

PS: You can message me if you’d like my wife’s recipe for the “worlds most amazing carrot cake” 😊
