All God’s Fullness.
Who was Jesus? Was He descended from King David? Was He indeed the Messiah? How does Psalm 110 fit in? Brian explains.

Jesus Teaches in the Temple
I’d like to read Mark Chapter 12, Verses 35-37.
“And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, ‘How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?’”
Mark 12:35-37
Reactions to Jesus
People had strong reactions to Jesus. People were never ho hum about Jesus or bored with him. There was no way to just ignore him. People fight against him or they put their faith in Him. The Jewish religious leaders chose to attack Jesus again and again. In this passage, Jesus goes on the attack and questions the Scribes.
Who are the Scribes? It is easy to spot a Scribe because he wears a white linen robe that comes right down to his feet, hemmed by a long, white fringe. They are elegant white swans, gliding along among ugly ducklings. They are called “Father”, or “Master”, or “Rabbi” – meaning “My Great One”. If you put on a great feast, Scribes are a must at the party and you give them a place of honor.
Jesus Asks the Question
But as Jesus starts asking the questions rather than being quizzed, the Scribes may be getting nervous. He starts them off with a warm-up question, meant to get them thinking about the Old Testament – their Old Testament: “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?”
Then Jesus asks a Bible question that puts some pressure on their brains. He quotes Psalm 110:1 –
“The Lord says to my Lord: ‘“Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’”
Psalm 110:1
He is saying, it was scribed . . . . dear Scribes, by God’s direction, so listen further as it states, “The Lord [Jehovah] said to my Lord [the Messiah], ‘sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.’”
A Migraine?
With the next question, the Scribes feel a migraine coming on: “David calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” Just 10 words, but major pressure on their thinking. Jesus is asking how Messiah could be both lesser than David (his son) and greater than David (his Lord) at the same time? Only through the Virgin Birth can Jesus be both God and Man and therefore he is both David’s Son and David’s Lord.
After this, their attacks stop. They are stumped. Mark wraps it up, with a bow, stating, “After that no one dared to ask him anymore questions.”
Jesus is descended from King David, but he actually existed before David. He is David’s Lord because he is God. He has to be. One man said it in poetry:
“If Christ is not divine, then lay the book away. Forget the place of bended knee and dream no more of worlds to be. Go seal again the tomb; Take down the cross, redemption’s sign, quench all the stars of hope that shine, and let us turn and travel on across the night … that knows … no dawn. If Christ is not divine.”
The Bible’s Poem to Jesus
Here is the Bible’s poem to the Lord Jesus Christ: “
He is the image of the invisible God … by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.”
Colossians 1:15-19
