Paul’s Pep Rally of Hope Part-5, Philippians 1:27-30.

Paul’s pep rally is found in Philippians chapter 1. Mark breaks down this passage and helps us understand why Paul said what he did.

Bible & Open Hands

Citizens of Heaven

Welcome to part 5 of this series. The title of today’s episode is Paul’s Pep Rally of Hope. Paul described citizens of heaven in Philippians 1,

Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News. Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God himself. For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him. We are in this struggle together. You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that I am still in the midst of it. (Philippians 1:27-30 NLT)

These words of Paul to the Philippian church bears all the characteristics of a pep talk:

  • Encouragement: Paul encouraging the Philippians to live as citizens of heaven and to stand firm in their faith, reminding them of their higher calling.
  • Motivation: He motivates them by highlighting their unity and shared purpose, emphasizing the importance of striving together for the faith.
  • Optimism: Paul instills a sense of hope and confidence, urging them not to be intimidated by their enemies, and assuring them of their salvation.
  • Personal Connection: He establishes a personal connection by sharing in their struggles, reminding them that they are not alone and that he, too, is enduring hardships.
  • A Call to Action: Paul calls them to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the Good News and to still be steadfast in their faith and unity.

The Importance of Christian Fellowship

This is an example of how important Christian fellowship is. Christ built His church upon the teaching and example of the Apostles. No matter how strong or independent we feel, this walk of faith is not a path to be tread alone. We need each other, and the local church is designed to be our lifeline. It’s crucial to provide each other support and stability, as we tackle the challenges that the world throws at all of Christ’s followers.

Hebrews 10:24–25 is a powerful passage that calls us to inspire one another toward love and good deeds, while remaining committed to gathering together in fellowship.

It says;

“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24–25

No Sugarcoating

Paul doesn’t sugarcoat the Christian life. There’s no doubt that believers will face significant struggles and varying degrees of suffering, because our citizenship is not of this world. We proudly stand under the banner of Christ our King, under His rule, in a kingdom He governs that stands in contrast to the culture around us.

May we view our suffering for Christ not as a burden, but as a privilege. Verses like John 15:18 offer us encouragement. Jesus told His disciples,

‘If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.’ John 15:18

These words affirm our identity in Him, encouraging us when we too are called to walk that same path He did– a life that stands in contrast to the ways of the world.

Our faith rests in a greater day yet to come, where all the trials we have endured in this world will fade in comparison to the glory we will receive.

Romans 8: 18 says,

“Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.”

Paul continues in verses 23-25,

“we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)” Romans 8:23-25

Partnering as a team, being there for one another and providing one another pep talks like Paul did, goes a long way.

Encouraging Others

When was the last time you encouraged someone? Today, more than ever, we have countless ways to lift others up; through a phone call, a quick email, or a message on social media. We’re truly without excuse. And isn’t it heartwarming when someone lets you know they’re thinking of you? The most powerful way to brighten someone’s day, whenever possible, is to meet in person and remind them they matter.

As we walk the path of faith, through a world that is dark and threatening, let’s remember our need for one other. Doing it alone is a hard path to tread.
