January 2, 2019 by Ray Marshall 3 Comments

Three Wishes receives a great review here from Steph Nickel. Steph says that Three Wishes “grabbed me by the throat and wouldn’t let go.”

Three Wishes

What would you ask for if you were granted three wishes? Fame? Fortune? Long life?

But wait …

Before you decide, know this: you must make the wishes and they are sure to work out badly for someone you care about. Not so easy now. Is it?

That’s the premise of Marcy Kennedy’s new series, including the prequel, Three Wishes: A Historical Fantasy Short Story.

Three Wishes Grabbed Me By The Throat

While I’ve read many good novels, few of them have grabbed me by the throat and wouldn’t let go until I turned the last page. Let’s just say I lost sleep when reading Three Wishes and anticipate the same will be true of the rest of the series.

True confessions: I enjoy watching fantasy and sci-fi TV shows and movies, but I don’t typically read books in these genres. Plus, I rarely read short stories of any kind. But because the author is a friend of mine—and an excellent author—I was eager to give it a chance. And boy, am I glad I did!

Three Wishes

Elements of a Great Story Like Three Wishes

There are many elements that come together to create what I consider to be a page-turning story, and Three Wishes has them all.

  • Characters I care about—or loathe, those who are complex and thre
    e-dimensional.
  • The sense that these characters were going about their lives before page 1 and will continue to do so after I close the book (or power down my e-reader) after reading the final page.
  • A storyline that propels me forward.
  • Action that takes my breath away. Add the rapidly incoming tide and the very real possibility of drowning, and I literally had difficulty breathing.
  • Uncertainty as to how the characters will escape the danger—or if they will. That uncertainty is intensified by the countless possibilities available to a fantasy author.
  • An overwhelming sense that I want to place the next book in the series on top of my TBR (to be read) pile, despite the plethora of books already awaiting my attention.

Three Wishes

Three Wishes Takes Place on the Isle of Skye

Finally, let’s talk setting, something I don’t typically care much about.

The fact that the story takes place on the Isle of Skye is exciting for me. My husband’s ancestors came from Skye, and we had the opportunity to visit in 2015, when we were in Scotland for our son’s wedding. As I read Three Wishes, I could envision some of the landscape, which changes very little over the years.

Marcy is “a science fiction and fantasy author who believe there’s always hope. Sometimes you just have to dig a little harder to find it.” I don’t think for a minute that I will regret any digging I will do into this series.

three wishesA Firm Grasp of Story Telling

Marcy also has a firm grasp on telling the story from a deep point-of-view. Readers feel as if they’re in the middle of the action, not just sitting on the sidelines or in a theatre seat.

Unless you’re an author, you may not give point-of-view much thought, but, hopefully, we all know what it’s like to be swept away by a good story. And that’s what caused me to lose sleep when reading this prequel.

It’s my hope (my wish) that you will give The Three Wishes series chance. Even if you don’t typically read fantasy, you may want to make an exception. Warning: you may become hooked.

Three Wishes is available as a bonus for those who purchase Cursed Wishes, the first full-length book in the series. I encourage you to order your copy today—and clear some room on your schedule. You’re gonna need it.
